The Cochin Indian Restaurant

Nestled on the bustling 61 High Street in Hemel Hempstead, The Cochin Indian Restaurant is more than just a local favorite-it’s a flavorful journey straight to the heart of Kerala, South India. From the moment you step in, the aroma of freshly ground spices and slow-cooked curries signals that this isn’t your average curry house. It’s authentic, bold, and steeped in tradition, yet refreshingly modern in its presentation.

The menu here is a celebration of coastal Indian cuisine, and trust me, it’s impossible to leave unimpressed. If you're new to South Indian food, start with their Masala Dosa-a golden, crisp crepe filled with delicately spiced potatoes, served with coconut chutney and a tangy sambar. It’s simple, but that’s what makes it so brilliant. Another favorite is the Medu Vada, a savory lentil doughnut that's lightly fried, fluffy on the inside, and perfect for dipping.

But what truly sets The Cochin Indian Restaurant apart is the Cochin Thali experience. This dish is more than a meal-it’s a beautifully balanced tray that brings together a starter, main course, and dessert. Each bite offers something different: creamy coconut curries, slow-roasted meats, tangy pickles, and refreshing salads, rounded off with something sweet and fragrant. It’s a sensory experience that locals swear by.

For those seeking something heartier, the Beef Roast is a standout. Slow-cooked with pepper, curry leaves, and spices, it’s rich and deeply satisfying. Seafood lovers will gravitate toward the Meen Pollichathu, where fish is marinated, wrapped in banana leaf, and cooked to tender perfection. And if you like your spice dialed up a notch, the Prawn Fry and Red Curry bring serious heat with beautifully layered flavors.

The vegetarian and vegan options are also thoughtfully prepared-not just an afterthought. The Aubergine Fry is crispy and rich, while the Pumpkin Soup is silky, spiced just right, and surprisingly comforting. Pair that with a hot cup from their great tea selection, and you’re in for a cozy afternoon, whether you’re dining solo or catching up with friends.

And yes, it’s not just about dinner. The restaurant is also popular for lunch, with takeaway options that are quick, satisfying, and never skimp on quality. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick Chicken Biriyani, a mild Korma, or some freshly made Salad with Indian flair, you’ll find something that hits the spot.

The restaurant also checks several boxes for accessibility-it offers wheelchair-accessible seating and a car park, which is always a plus in this part of town. Inside, the atmosphere is laid-back, unpretentious, and welcoming. Think soft lighting, warm tones, and an open kitchen vibe that lets the spices do the talking.

If you’re looking for something to sip while you dine, The Cochin Indian Restaurant serves beer, wine, and spirits, all thoughtfully paired with the dishes on offer. They’ve also got halal food, healthy options, late-night bites, and an overall vibe that works for solo diners, casual dates, and small groups alike.

What makes this place really shine is the consistency. Every dish feels handcrafted-like it’s been perfected over time. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in the food. Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, you’ll find the same attention to detail, the same bold flavors, and the same warm welcome.
